Rooted in Tradition: The Early Years of Our Farm

In its early years, Legacy Taste of the Garden emerged as a family farm operation rooted in the rich heritage of Greer Farms, where Black farmers had been tending the land since 1855. The legacy was forged with the intention of passing down generational knowledge of sustainable and entrepreneurial living. It aimed to rekindle the wisdom of cultivating fresh produce and educate on the path to agricultural self-sustainability. The primary goal was to bridge the gap between local producers and consumers, bolstering community economic vitality.

Growing Together: Evolution and Expansion

Today, after more than a century and a half, Legacy continues to honor its heritage. Over the years, it has evolved into an organization dedicated to empowering Indiana BIPOC farmers, individuals, and communities. Legacy achieves this through education, networking, and the provision of vital information to support a healthy, sustainable, and empowered way of life. In total, Legacy Taste of the Garden has thrived for over 166 years, transitioning from its farming roots to become a beacon of empowerment in the community.
